Schools Drop Landlines As More Students Carry Cell Phones

Consumers are moving away from being tied-down by landlines. And so too are universities as more students carry cell phones. Glenn Gray, UW-Green Bay's director of residence life, said nearly all students on campus have cell phones and it's not worth the cost of offering landlines when students don't use them.

Next-gen WiFi Expected To Be in 99% of North American Campuses by 2013

Although the wireless standard 802.11n is found in less than 3 percent of North American universities currently, it will be available in 99 percent by 2013, according to a new study. North American schools have made most of the early running in WiFi adoption, but the rest of the world, led by Europe, is rapidly catching up.

RIAA Pursues State-Level Anti-Piracy Bills

There was a bill supported by RIAA that was put forth towards the end of last year in the House of Representatives which would have effectively required colleges to play “copyright police” in order to insure that there was no illegal filesharing happening on their campuses. The first such bill has just passed in Tennessee and is being considered by several more states this year.

Copyright Cop Position Added to White House

A bill recently passed by Congress creates a new position in the White House called the U.S. Intellectual Property Enforcement Representative. This new position helps to make sure that organizations like RIAA can continue to gain legal ground even after the presidential election changes major players in the government.
